Panel discussion: Microplastics – what is the problem?

The University of Exeter estimates that 10% of the plastics we produce ending up in the oceans, by now filling the worlds oceans with around 5.25 trillion pieces of floating plastic. At the same time, media fills up with footage of animals with their stomachs filled with plastic garbage, choking on fishing lines and slowly poisoning themselves by ingesting tiny minute plastic pieces carrying environmental pollutants with them.
According to several scientific institutions, among them the Norwegian Institute of Public Health and the Norwegian National Institute of Nutrition and Seafood Research, consuming fish or other animals that has ingested such pollutant-carrying microplastics is not harmful to human health.

So why should we care?

Join us for a panel discussion on the scientific and social challenges of microplastics.

When & where: Tuesday, June 20, at 6.30 PM in the foyer of the The Science Library at the University of Oslo, Vilhelm Bjerknes’ hus, Moltke Moes vei 35.

On the panel:
Dr. Dorte Herzke, Head of Section Environmental Chemistry, NILU – Norwegian Institute for Air Research
Dr. Stephan Kubowicz, Research Scientist, Polymer Chemistry, SINTEF Materials and Chemistry
Inger Lise Nerland Bråte, PhD student on Ecotoxicology at the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA)

The language of the arrangement will be Norwegian. (More Information in Norwegian here)

Young Scientist Quiz (Jun 20, 08 pm)

The Chemists’ Society Proton will host an evening of quiz and pizza in the Science Library basement, where the Scientist Society (Realistforeningen) basement pub will be open. Join us for a fun and relaxed evening with excellent opportunities to both flex your quizzing muscles and meet other young academics!
